Who was Mariátegui?

José Carlos Mariátegui was a Peruvian Marxist intellectual and founder of the Communist Party of Peru. His writings, particularly his historical-materialist analyses of his native Peru and the struggles of its Indigenous peoples, would go on to influence some of 20th century Latin America’s most prominent revolutionaries.

Why study Mariátegui?

Mariátegui, like Antonio Gramsci, was a thinker who assiduously applied dialectical and historical-materialist methods to his analysis not only of history, but to art, culture, and human relationships. While his most famous works on Peru may seem immediately relevant only to a Latin American context, Mariátegui should be seen as a model for engaging in what Marx called the “ruthless criticism of all that exists.”
