Volume I: The Contemporary Scene
First published in 1925, The Contemporary Scene was Mariátegui’s first book, with most of the essays previously appearing in the publications Variedades and Mundial. These pieces focus on the pressing topics of the day, including the rise of fascism, the Russian Revolution and world socialism, and more. Despite its explicit focus on the contemporary issues of the period following World War I and preceding World War II, these writings remain prescient for our times and offer a unique analytical perspective on this key period in world politics, one largely unseen both at the time and today.
